The Konrad Koselleck Big Band is something else. Time and again band leader Koselleck finds adventurous combinations of jazz, cabaret, musical, pop, rock, funk, Latin and even classical music. The repertoire ranges from Brecht and Weill to Nina Hagen and Rammstein, plus many new works by contemporary composers. Koselleck has a keen sense of atmosphere, he knows when to slow down or fire up the band… the conviction of an ecstatic big band is phenomenal.

Geoff Gascoyne and Chris Lee supply arrangements that are sparkling, inventive and heartfelt. Mark leads a superb band including Robin Aspland, Dave Whitford and Emiliano Caroselli. Mark has received glowing reviews for his interpretations of 20th century standards by a diverse range of songwriters. 'Amsterdam-based Philipp Rüttgers made name last year with the album Repetitive Mind by his seven-piece ensemble Phil’s Music Laboratory. For his new composition he formed a group with the singular English multi-instrumentalist Heidi Heidelberg, who performs the enchanting lead vocals. The group is rounded out by violinist Oene van Geel, cellist Jörg Brinkmann and drummer Mark Schilders. Each year, North Sea Jazz commissions a promising Dutch jazz composer to freely write a composition. Philipp grew up in 1980s Berlin, a turbulent time in which he sought refuge in fairy tales. In his own fantastic story he offers a critical view on today’s society.

The sound of the recent album Modern Lore by Julian Lage was inspired by the time when country, jazz and rock ’n’ roll were in their ‘wild-west period’, when people were dancing and singing to it, according to the American guitarist who took up the timeless Fender Telecaster for the recordings. Still, the music sounds contemporary, thanks to the unadorned sound and the catchy double bass and drum grooves. At the BIMHUIS, Julian Lage will perform with bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Eric Doob. At a very young age he already gained recognition from well-known guitarists and jazz musicians (including Santana and Gary Burton) and became a protégé of Jim Hall, one of the most influential masters of the jazz guitar.

Monty Alexander is back with his trio after his sold out Bimhuis gig in 2013; a fresh opportunity to catch the famous pianist in an intimate setting. Monty Alexander’s playing balances between jazz, soul and such Caribbean styles as calypso and reggae. As a teenager the pianist moved from Jamaica to New York. He played with Frank Sinatra and Ray Brown and made his breakthrough as a solo artist in the 1970s.

Revelation of the year at the 'Victoires de la musique' awards in 2013, Thomas Enhco is one of the main figures After studying at the Centre des Musiques Didier Lockwood. In 2010, he has already released two albums and wins two major French awards : Django d’Or “New Talent” and third Prize at the Martial Solal International Jazz Piano Competition. In 2012, Thomas Enhco’s trio record Fireflies sets his career at an international level. After a first solo album last year and an duo album with marimbist Vassilena Serafimova released in April, Thomas Enhco is back on our stage to explore the art of trio.

For this special event, pianist/composer Alex Curtis leads a stellar line up, comprising of Daisy Chute on vocals, Thomas Gould on violin, Kevin Glasgow on bass and Jamie Murray on drums. Alongside this original material, the group will also play fresh arrangements of standards and music by the likes of the Police and the Beatles, all with a decidedly contemporary edge. Originally from Belo Horizonte in Brazil, Luna initially settled in Barcelona in the early 2000's and over the following 10 years went on to establish herself as a Brazilian singer of considerable note within the Spanish musical community. Looking to broaden her artistic horizons she relocated to London in 2014 and has since found herself in high demand. Her smooth but powerful vocals have been heard in a variety of high profile venues and festivals such as The 606 club, Bulls Head, PizzaExpress Dean St and Canary Wharf Jazz Festival and she has recorded an impressive 4 albums under her name for the well respected Catalan label Temps Records.

Moule’s exceptional range of expression and Wallace’s virtuosic arrangements breathe life into music from the Great American Songbook to Johnny Mandell and Kirsty MacColl via Shel Silverstein and the lyrics of Simon’s collaborator of many years Fran Landesman.
