PREMIERE: ROY HARGROVE QUINTET
SUNDAY, MAY 31 AT 21:00
In the month of May, Stingray DJAZZ presents a breathtaking premiere, starring none other than Roy Hargrove! On Sunday, May 31, Stingray DJAZZ viewers can enjoy the great trumpeter Roy Hargrove (1969-2018) in a performance at the 2017 Jazz en Tête Festival in Clermont-Ferrand. An emblematic figure of "neo-bop", Hargrove was known for his dual career: leading progressive jazz projects while always welcoming the chance to sit in with legends like Oscar Peterson, Herbie Hancock or Shirley Horn. At Clermont-Ferrand, Hargrove leads a quintet featuring Justin Robinson (saxophone), Tadataka Unno (piano), Ameen Saleem (double bass), and Quincy Phillips (drums). The setlist is as versatile as Hargrove’s musicality, including songs as "Cape Town Ambush", Miles Davis’ "The Theme", "Shade of Jade", and " Soothe Me". Among the highlights are a piano-trumpet duet on the standard "Wild Is the Wind" and Michael Jackson's "Rock with You”.
Roy Hargrove Quintet
SUNDAY, MAY 31 AT 21:00
Emblematic trumpeter of the second wave of "neo-boppers" that appeared at the end of the 80s in the wake of Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove has established himself as one of the most talented and unpredictable of the lot. While performing alongside Herbie Hancock, Sonny Rollins and Diana Krall, the Texan (born in Waco in 1969) turned leader has distilled some twenty sonic manifestos, going from orthodox and inventive jazz to funk or the hottest Afrobeat.
