EDITOR’S CHOICE: GEORGE SHEARING
SEPTEMBER 25 AT 21:00 CEST
Like every month, Editor’s Choice presents a hand-picked favorite of Stingray DJAZZ's editor-in-chief Rokas Kučinskas. This month's choice fell on British pianist George Shearing in a 1992 duo performance with bassist Neil Swainson. Throughout jazz history, piano-and-bass duets have always had more subtlety than the traditional piano trio outfit, since the former format allows the bass more space to shine and offers the players greater flexibility in terms of timekeeping due to the absence of a drummer. Being one of jazz piano's all-time greats, Shearing takes full advantage of this freedom in this performance: don’t miss this first-class duo on September 25 at 21:00 CEST!
George Shearing Duo feat. Neil Swainson
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 25 AT 21:00 CEST
British pianist George Shearing enjoyed an international reputation as an instrumentalist, arranger, and composer. Equally at home on the classical concert stage as in jazz clubs, he was recognized for his inventive, orchestrated jazz. In this live recording from the Munich Philharmonie, Shearing played in a duo format with Canadian double bassist Neil Swainson. The repertoire consisted of a selection of compositions by Shearing himself, among them ‘Lullaby Of Birdland’, which is a standard in jazz repertoire.
