PREMIERES: NEWPORT JAZZ FESTIVAL ROTTERDAM

Every Sunday evening throughout December, Stingray DJAZZ premieres new concerts at 21:00 CET. This month, special attention goes to the European editions of the Newport Jazz Festival. The Newport Jazz Festival, first established in the North-American town of Newport, Rhode Island, in the summer of 1954, has become known as one of the largest multi-day celebrations of jazz worldwide. It has resulted in numerous famous live albums from top-rate jazz stars, and has spawned several international tours. Stingray DJAZZ presents vintage compilations of concert highlights from the Newport Jazz Festival in Europe recorded at De Doelen in Rotterdam, The Netherlands in 1968 and 1972. On December 4, enjoy performances by drummer Art Blakey and pianist Horace Silver, both leading their own bands. On December 11, marvel at jazz organist Jimmy Smith and his group, the Cannonball Adderley Quintet, the Dave Brubeck Trio with Gerry Mulligan and Paul Desmond, and the Charles Mingus Sextet. On December 18, another three amazing jazz and blues men lead their respective bands: pianist Horace Silver, blues musician Muddy Waters, and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie. On December 25, don’t miss out on another incredible selection, which includes the bands of pianist Dave Brubeck, bassist Charles Mingus, and organist Jimmy Smith. The Newport Jazz Festival, first established in the North-American town of Newport, Rhode Island in the summer of 1954, has now grown to become one of the largest multi-day celebrations of jazz worldwide. It has resulted in numerous famous live albums from top-rate jazz stars, and has spawned several worldwide tours, including editions of the Newport Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. In October 1968, two former colleagues met again on stage, this time leading their own bands at the Newport Jazz Festival in Rotterdam: drummer Art Blakey and pianist Horace Silver were both co-founders of The Jazz Messengers.

The Newport Jazz Festival, first established in the North-American town of Newport, Rhode Island in the summer of 1954, has now grown to become one of the largest multi-day celebrations of jazz worldwide. It has resulted in numerous famous live albums from top-rate jazz stars, and has spawned several worldwide tours, including editions of the Newport Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. In October 1972, an outstanding lineup played shoulder-to-shoulder at the 7th Newport Jazz Festival held in Rotterdam's then-recently built concert venue De Doelen. These four masterful groups consisted of alto saxophonist "Cannonball" Adderley and his quintet (Nat Adderley on cornet, George Duke on keyboards, Walter Booker on bass, and Roy McCurdy on drums), Hammond organist Jimmy Smith and his band (Art Farmer on flugelhorn, Illinois Jacquet on tenor saxophone, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Clark Terry on trumpet, and Roy Haynes on drums), pianist Dave Brubeck and his trio (Jack Six on bass, Alan Dawson on drums) with accompaniment from Paul Desmond on alto saxophone and Gerry Mulligan on baritone saxophone, and bassist Charles Mingus and his group (Joe Gardner on trumpet, Hamiet Bluiett on baritone saxophone, John Foster on piano, Roy Brooks on drums) with the great high-note trumpeter Cat Anderson as a guest.
