JULY PREMIERES: NORTH SEA JAZZ

Every Sunday evening throughout July, Stingray DJAZZ premieres new concerts at 21:00 CEST. This month, special attention goes to the rich video archives of the North Sea Jazz Festival. Today the festival is the largest indoor music festival in the world, known globally as the event that explores the past, present and future of jazz in three days. Its audio-visual archives contain priceless gems from jazz history. On July 3, enjoy a 1989 performance by the incomparable pianist Ahmad Jamal and his trio. On July 10, experience the spectacular Cuban trumpeter Arturo Sandoval in concert at the 1986 festival. On July 17, enjoy a 1982 concert by the matchless jazz vocalist Jon Hendricks. On July 24, don’t miss out on the Branford Marsalis Quartet, filmed in 1987. Finally, on July 31, tune in for a bubbly, spirited set by the Tania Maria Trio from 1988 – all on Stingray DJAZZ!

The North Sea Jazz Festival is the largest indoor music festival in the world, known globally as the event where the past, present and future of jazz are featured within three days. Next to a firm base of jazz as the festival’s staple music genre, many others, such as blues, soul, funk, or hip hop, pass by. In 1989, legendary jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal brought his trio to the North Sea Jazz Festival. Accompanied by James Cammack on bass and David Bowler on drums, Jamal showcased his excellence.

In 1986, Cuban trumpeter Arturo Sandoval brought his band with him to the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague. Featuring talented performers like pianist Hilario Durán and guitarist Jorge Chicoy, they displayed a master class in Latin jazz fusion.

Next to a firm base of jazz as the festival’s staple music genre, many others, such as blues, soul, funk, or hip hop, pass by. In 1982, vocalese maestro Jon Hendricks brought his wife Judith Hendricks, daughter Michelle Hendricks and mouth trumpeter Bob Gurland to perform at the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague. Accompanying them are pianist Michael Weiss, bassist Murray Wall and drummer Marvin Smith as they cover classics by Duke Ellington and Count Basie.

In 1987, jazz saxophonist Branford Marsalis brought his band to the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague. This broadcast presents a selection of that performance, displaying the magical and mesmerising energy coming from the legendary saxophone virtuoso and member of the Marsalis jazz dynasty.

In 1988, acclaimed Brazilian singer and pianist Tania Maria performed with bassist Leonard Traversa and drummer Kim Plainfield at the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague. Maria is known for her energetic personality and unique style of singing that draws from a variety of jazz, Latin and pop traditions.
