Wallace Roney earned the admiration and respect of his colleagues and his elders since age 16. He has been an integral part of the band with Tony Williams, Ornette Coleman, Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, Philly Joe Jones, Walter Davis Jr., Herbie Hancock, Jay McShann, David Murray, McCoy Tyner, Sonny Rollins, Curtis Fuller, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Dizzy Gillespie to name a few. He was one of the few musicians in his generation who learned and perfected his craft directly from alliances with Jazz Masters.

Dominic J Marshall returns to Pizza Express with his trio in a new guise: has been sharing his life between the UK and Holland and so has been running two line-ups in parallel. 'The Triolithic' brings these two ensembles and experiences together for the first time - “A jazz‐record that twirls with energy” (NRC) It’s the first time that the Dutch line up, feat. Glenn Gaddum jr and Jamie Peet comes over to the UK for only a few appearances– a real treat!

Kristian Borring, Danish jazz guitarist and composer, has been praised for his sense of tasteful melody and colorful harmony delivered in a cool playground of rhythm. Kristian’s music is engaging and provides the listener with exciting twists and turns. His playing is lyrical yet emphatic; expect hard swing to no nonsense grooves and contemplative melodies to intricate musical interplay. An in-demand guitarist and improviser on the UK scene and has also performed all over Europe.

Joshua Abrams Natural Information Society  |  April 4 2018 - 21:00

Natural Information Society sounds intangible, simultaneously relaxing and energetic. The band led by Joshua Abrams combines traditional and electric instruments to create innovative music, drawing from minimalism, jazz, krautrock and more. Joshua Abrams began his career in the now world famous hip-hop band The Roots, before he moved from his native Philadelphia to Chicago, where he became an in-demand double bassist with band leaders as diverse as Nicole Mitchell, Fred Anderson and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy. Since 2010 he leads National Information Society.

Colin Vallon Trio  |  April 5 2018 - 20:30

Swiss pianist Colin Vallon emerged himself in jazz and classical music and distilled his own style from them. He developed new prepared piano techniques, changing the timbre of the piano strings directly. Colin formed his trio with two mainstays of the Swiss avant-garde, double bassist Patrice Moret and drummer Julian Sartorius, who has previously collaborated with, among others, Matthew Herbert, Sylvie Courvoisier and Rhys Chatham. Their most recent album Danse appeared earlier this year on ECM Records.

Dick Oatts is a living saxophone legend. He became a member of the Thad Jones - Mel Lewis Orchestra in 1977 after a move from Iowa to New York City. Since then he has recorded and toured the world with many of the greatest big bands, small groups and artists in the history of jazz, such as Red Rodney, Sam Jones-Tom Harrell, Tito Puente, Gunther Schuller and Lalo Schiffrin. He appears with a powerfully swinging, creative quartet on the last night of their European Spring tour.

Scopes is group of four talented musicians who met in New York. They all awards winnings artists from their own original City (Berlin, Paris, Vienne and Amsterdam). The group consists of four musicians who met in New York, where each spent several years and developed his own style in music. Four individual composers with sense for the pulse of time have joined to form a whole and create a distinct band-sound. While their music is deeply grounded in the jazz tradition, their songs serve as a platform to explore new realms through improvisation.

Nina Kristofferson sings Billie Holiday is a very intimate and special concert taken from this musical play’s brilliant cocktail of songs and stories from Billie Holiday’s life, featuring her greatest hits: God Bless The Child, Lover Man, Strange Fruit, Don’t Explain, All of me and many more. Nina Kristofferson describes how, “Billie’s unusual timbre tells a story like no other jazz singer. Her phrasing and timing is heartfelt as she takes you on her journey. Nina Kristofferson has won critical acclaim as an accomplished singer of many styles encompassing Jazz & Blues to Opera.

Jazzmeia Horn  |  April 15 2018 - 20:30

There’s great anticipation surrounding Jazzmeia Horn; she has already been compared to Betty Carter and Sarah Vaughan, and she received compliments from John Hendricks and Al Jarreau. Her singing and vocalese skills are of the highest level. At a young age, Jazzmeia Horn won various Downbeat Student Music Awards and she twice reached first place in the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Competition. In 2015 she was declared winner of the Thelonious Monk Institute Jazz Vocals Competition.

After more than a decade on the Funk and Soul scene, Nick Pride & The Pimptones return with a newly revamped line up. Shades of Soul are delighted to welcome them to the PizzaExpress Jazz Club for their debut. Their live show kicks off with tight, punchy instrumentals, making way to sweetly crafted soul music as they are joined onstage by fantastic new vocalist Eliza Lawson.

Eddie Henderson Quartet  |  April 27 2018 - 22:00

Eddie Henderson, continues to be one of the most original trumpet players in jazz today and remains at the height of his musical prowess. His father sang with the Charioteers, and his mother danced at the Cotton Club. Louis Armstrong gave Eddie his first trumpet lessons at age 9. In 1956, Miles Davis was staying at the Henderson's family home at a time that Eddie had an engagement at the Black Hawk Jazz Club. Miles, Impressed with Eddie's ability to perform his famous "Sketches of Spain" without a fluff, encouraged Henderson to seek his own originality.

The ICP Orchestra is a unique phenomenon in the world, a cross between a big band and a chamber orchestra in which brass and string players improvise on the cutting edge. Instant Composers Pool was founded in 1967 by Han Bennink and Misha Mengelberg and has developed into a versatile orchestra, connecting American swing to European music, avant-garde and a healthy dose of absurdism.

Ray Blue’s music can be described as a fusion of melodic classic jazz and rhythmic groove. Ray is a New York bred saxophonist, composer, arranger and educator who is a regular on the New York scene and performs internationally. As a leader he performs with a classic rhythm section or an Organ quartet. Over the years he has shared the stage and studio as leader, sideman and band member with John Gilmore, Dr. Art Davis, Benny Powell, Eddie Henderson, Charlie Persip Super Band, Clifford Adams, Wycliff Gordon, Alicia Keys and many others.
