Saxophonist Mars Williams presents An Ayler Xmas, a special project that he has been doing for five years in Chicago, celebrating the holiday season by playing well-known Christmas songs in the spirit of Albert Ayler (1936-1970) together with local musicians. With his expressive saxophone playing, Ayler unleashed the free jazz movement in the 1960s. His gospel influenced themes are a perfect match to Christmas classics such as O Tannenbaum, according to Williams, who will now take on the challenge collaborating with well-known Dutch improvisers.

Ronnie Scott’s welcomes Incognito back once again for irresistible grooves and soulful vocals punctuated by the trademark Incognito horns. Performing a selection of classics alongside new songs taken from their most recent release, 2014’S ‘Amplified Soul’, a set of wonderfully crafted songs that echo a classic era associated with 70’s Marvin and Stevie. Soaked in soul, coated in jazz with more than a twist of funk and dance, Incognito’s catchy numbers are immediate and infectious.

At the start of the new year Jazzfest Amsterdam treats us with a special preview concert. The Amsterdam jazz festival organized by musicians will have its seventh edition on March 17 at Studio/K. As a preview, this mini festival and new year’s celebration at the BIMHUIS will feature a selection of the most interesting and versatile musicians from Amsterdam. They will collaborate, challenge themselves and the audience, and they will rock the house. Line-up: Koeniverse3, Anton Goudsmit & Jett Rebel and Mabassa.

Jesse Davis Quartet  |  January 12 2017 - 21:00

Jesse Davis (born 1965) is a former student of Ellis Marsalis at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts and one the most respected musicians from New Orleans. In addition to leading his own group, Davis has performed with such stellar jazz musicians as Jack McDuf, Major Holley, Cecil Payne, Illinois Jacquet, Chico Hamilton, Junior Mance, Kenny Barron, Cedar Walton, Nicholas Payton, and Roy Hargrove. He toured in 1996 along with Phil Woods, Charles McPherson, and Gary Bartz in the group Sax Machine.

Since he was 18 alto saxophonist Ben van Gelder has been traveling between the Netherlands and New York, where he studied with Lee Konitz and Mark Turner. Like his pianist brother Gideon, he formed his own band in New York as well. He collaborated with internationally renowned peers such as Ambrose Akinmusire and Aaron Parks. Now he will present his New York quartet featuring pianist Sam Harris, bassist Joe Sanders and drummer Nasheet Waits.

Alumna of the famous Berklee College of Music, the Colombian singer Marta Gomez and her band perform her own compositions, incorporating smooth Latin American rhythms, Caribbean exuberance, Andean nostalgia, as well as hints of jazz and pop. Her song, “Paula Ausente”, was inspired by Isabel Allende’s novel and won the SIBL Project International Songwriting Contest; it has been covered by icons such as David Bowie and Tom Waits.

Over the last five decades, Salena Jones has been a central figure on the British jazz scene and from her base here she has conquered the world. She has made 43 solo albums and 22 singles to date. Salena has sung with Louis Armstrong, Hank Jones, Ray Brown, Sarah Vaughan, Maynard Ferguson, Mark Murphy, Lionel Hampton, Kenny Burrell, Dudley Moore, Roy Budd, and Toots Thielemans, Tom Jones, Antonio Carlos Jobim, the BBC Big Band and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Their 2009 album Chamber Music was deemed one of the best albums of the year by, amongst others, The Guardian, Le Monde and NPR. Since then kora player Ballaké Sissoko and cellist Vincent Segal have been engaged in a musically astounding conversation. As absolute masters in their respective fields (the Mandrago tradition of the griot for Sissoko, classical music for Segal) they can fully concentrate on what transcends these traditions: breathing, listening, reacting to one another and to the beauty of the moment.

Contemporary blues icon, Lucky Peterson was discovered by blues legend Willie Dixon when he was three years old, released his first record at five and soon after appeared on The Tonight Show. Trained by keyboardists Bill Doggett and Jimmy Smith, Peterson went on to play behind the likes of Little Milton, and Bobby “Blue” Bland, learning his craft and become one of the finest blues musicians in the world. Appearing here performing the music of the late great Hammond Organ legend Jimmy Smith

This spring sees the release of the new solo album by pianist Aruán Ortiz, a rising star from the jazz and improvised music scene of Brooklyn, New York. As a solo pianist, he left his mark with his impressive album Cub(an)ism, released last year on Swiss quality label Intakt. The Cuban-born musician incorporates different forms in his compositions, resulting in a unique new style. It reflects his fascination for modern classical music as well as Afro-Cuban traditions, and for great jazz innovators such as Ornette Coleman and Thelonious Monk.

Top players from the international gypsy jazz world will unite for the fourth edition of Django Amsterdam. Highlight on Friday is the concert by the Rosenberg Trio led by guitarist Stochelo Roseberg, who’s widely recognized as a true heir to Django Reinhardt’s throne. Violinist Christiaan van Hemert will open the evening with his project inspired by the Rome recordings of Django and violinist Stéphane Grappelli. The concerts will be followed by a live session featuring legendary Australian guitarist Ian Date.

With 30 albums to his credit and having performed on over 100 albums that have gone Gold or Platinum, Larry Carlton has set a standard for artistry that spans three decades.
