2025 REWIND

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 21 FROM 21:00

In 2025 Rewind, Stingray DJAZZ looks back on a year of musical highs and poignant farewells. The program celebrates the most popular broadcasts of the year, looks to the future with today’s brightest stars, and pays tribute to the artists lost in 2025. Singers Cleo Laine and Sheila Jordan, trumpeter Chuck Mangione, pianist Andy Bey, and multi-instrumentalist Hermeto Pascoal are just a few of the legendary jazz musicians who left us in 2025. The heart of this retrospective is a broadcast that defined 2025 on Stingray DJAZZ: the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Keith Jarrett’s seminal Köln Concert. This theme has taken on a new poignancy following the passing of drummer Jack DeJohnette (1942-2025) last October. The tribute begins with Keith Jarrett’s Standards Trio’s iconic 1986 performance at Estival Jazz Lugano, of which DeJohnette was an integral part: this broadcast now serves as both a celebration of a 2025 highlight and a memorial to a master. DeJohnette’s legacy is further honored with two more programs: an extraordinary 1985 concert from his own group, Special Edition, at Estival Jazz, and the documentary ‘Miles Electric: A Different Kind of Blue’, which examines trumpeter Miles Davis’s revolutionary electric era and features DeJohnette’s powerful performance at the legendary 1970 Isle of Wight festival. Stingray DJAZZ also remembers the great Roy Ayers, who passed in March 2025, with a short documentary featuring precious interviews with the American acid jazz vibraphonist. From reflection, the program turns to the vibrant present and future of jazz, celebrating two artists who are very much alive and who lit up the screen in 2025: Gregory Porter, who earned a prestigious Edison Oeuvreprijs in October, and American songstress Melody Gardot. Both appeared in highly-rated Stingray DJAZZ premieres, recording intimate sessions at Château d'Hérouville, France. Toast to the past, present, and future of jazz with Stingray DJAZZ, Wednesday, January 21 from 21:00!

Miles Electric: A Different Kind of Blue

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 21 at 15:50

When he released "Bitches Brew" in 1970, Miles Davis opened up a new angle to jazz which stirred up emotions like no other record before. Some critics accused Davis of selling out, while the public bought it like crazy. It is one of the most examined albums of all time, even garnering a box set of the sessions. To date, "Bitches Brew" is one of the top selling jazz albums of all time. "Miles Electric: A Different Kind of Blue" examines the next step in the creative process…performing these songs live. The 1970 Isle of Wight featured an array of performers from The Who to Jethro Tull to Joni Mitchell. With improvisation playing a big role in the performance, the band (Jack DeJohnette, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Gary Bartz and Dave Holland) had to be "on", yet ready to change on the fly. Directed by award-winning producer Murray Lerner, "Miles Electric" sits down with several of the performers who played with Miles, interspersed with his 1970 Isle of Wight performance, as well as artists such as Carlos Santana and Joni Mitchell, who describe the impact Miles Davis had towards music.

Portrait of Roy Ayers

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 21 at 17:20

‘The legend of the groove’ is a series of documentaries devoted to the musicians who were most influential on contemporary hip hop, soul, rhythm 'n' blues, and on the course of history. Between the late 1950s and now, these musicians radically changed music. Although sometimes hardly in the public eye, they have all been major sources of inspiration for today's major artists: Prince, Erykah Badu, Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix.

Gregory Porter

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 21 at 17:45

In the 1960s, composer Michel Magne transformed the Château d'Hérouville, an 18th-century country house north of Paris and former home of lovers George Sand and Frédéric Chopin, into the first residential recording studio. In addition to its excellent facilities, the complex featured a swimming pool and a beautiful garden, allowing artists to stay for weeks or months at a time. From David Bowie and Iggy Pop to Pink Floyd and Chet Baker, countless stars recorded unforgettable music here until the studio closed in the 1980s. Three decades later, Château d'Hérouville has reopened its doors. This program follows American baritone Gregory Porter as he collaborates with the British electro-pop band Metronomy. The former American football player, who later dedicated himself entirely to music, gives an interview at Hérouville and performs songs including ‘Don't Loose Your Steam’, ‘In Fashion’, and ‘Sunny’. The British band Metronomy contributes songs such as ‘The Look’, ‘Night Owl’, and ‘Mick Slow’. Metronomy consists of Joseph Mount (drums), Oscar Cash (saxophone, keys), and Michael Lovett (keys). Gregory Porter’s own band consists of Lakecia Benjamin (saxophone), Chip Crawford (piano), Jahmal Nichols (bass guitar), and Emanuel Harrold (drums).

This program follows American singer-songwriter Melody Gardot as she visits the legendary studio. After an accident in 2003 left her hypersensitive to light and sound, Gardot discovered the healing power of music. At Hérouville, she gives an interview and plays a breathtaking live set. Her performance opens with a beautiful version of ‘Baby I’m a Fool’ and includes ‘If The Stars Were Mine’ and ‘Les Étoiles,’ before concluding with the Chet Baker hit ‘You Don’t Know What Love Is.’ Melody Gardot (piano, guitar, vocals) is accompanied by Charles Staab (drums), Sam Minaie (double bass), Mitchell Long (guitar), Sylvain Gontard (trumpet), Ludovic Beier (accordion), Artyom Manoukyan (cello), and Guillaume Latour, Alexandra Kondo, and Benjamin Ducasse (violin).
