EDITOR’S CHOICE: BIG BAND ORCHID LIVE AT STUDIO DE L'ERMITAGE

Like every month, Editor’s Choice presents a hand-picked favorite of Stingray DJAZZ's editor-in-chief, Karen van der Stal. This month's choice fell on the all-European big band Orchid. Described as “the missing link between American jazz trumpeter and bandleader Thad Jones, and Russian modernist composer Igor Stravinsky,” the band’s eighteen musicians are enthusiastic about playing original music in a modern-day ensemble. This youthful and well-balanced formation draws equally from jazz’s great big bands and European art and world music. Orchid Big Band invites listeners to embark on a spirited journey to the very borders of orchestral jazz during this 2023 album release concert, recorded at Studio de l'Ermitage in Paris. The musicians are Christelle Raquillet (flute); Olga Amelchenko, Julien Dubois, Jeanne Michard, Maxime Berton (saxophone); Gabriel Levasseur, Olivier Gay, Laure Fréjacques, Julie Varlet (trumpet); Rozann Bézier, Sébastien Arruti, Gabrielle Rachel, Sébastien Llado (trombone); Mathilda Haynes (guitar); Clément Simon (piano); Nolwenn Leizour (double bass); Gaétan Diaz (drums); and Thomas Julienne (conductor).
