June 26 marks American jazz drummer Joey Baron’s milestone 70th birthday. The hard-working drummer has worked with an endless list of musicians in and out of the jazz field, including Marianne Faithfull, Michael Jackson, and David Bowie, the latter of whom stated: "Metronomes shake in fear, Joey Baron is so steady". Baron remains the go-to drummer for jazz artists, with a resume that includes gigs with his legendary compatriots Carmen McRae, Tony Bennett, Lee Konitz, Al Jarreau, Jim Hall, Philip Glass, as well as Danish guitarist Jakob Bro, and young Belgian pianist Bram De Looze, whose recent projects feature Baron. To celebrate the life of this phenomenally versatile, self-taught avant-garde jazz musician, Stingray DJAZZ presents an improv-heavy performance with eminent double bassist Gary Peacock and pianist Marc Copland.
