OCTOBER PREMIERES: JAZZ FROM THE DUTCH ARCHIVES

SUNDAYS THROUGHOUT OCTOBER AT 21:00 CE(S)T

Every Sunday evening throughout October, Stingray DJAZZ premieres new concerts at 21:00 CE(S)T. This month, special attention goes to historic jazz concerts by jazz greats recorded in the Netherlands. These legendary concerts were recorded between 1957 and 1983 at iconic venues throughout the country. On October 2, swing along with the Duke Ellington Orchestra at Concertgebouw Amsterdam. On October 9, enjoy the unique vocal stylings of Sammy Davis Jr. in that same venue. On October 16, watch the Lionel Hampton Big Band perform at Kurhaus Scheveningen. On October 23, let yourself be amazed by the great Canadian pianist Oscar Peterson performing at the Concertgebouw on a shared bill with vocalist extraordinaire Ella Fitzgerald. Finally, on October 30, marvel at the ineffable technique of jazz pianist Erroll Garner – all on Stingray DJAZZ!


Duke Ellington Orchestra

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 2 AT 21:00 CEST

The Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam is a world-renowned concert hall, known for its first-rate acoustics. It has attracted many famous performers over the years and is one of the Netherlands' most treasured musical institutions. On November 2, 1958, American jazz titan Duke Ellington and his Orchestra performed two concerts at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Among the many talents in the Orchestra were trumpeter Clark Terry, trombonist Quentin Jackson, saxophonist Johnny Hodges and violinist Ray Nance.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 9 AT 21:00 CEST

The Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam is a world-renowned concert hall, known for its first-rate acoustics. It has attracted many famous performers over the years and is one of the Netherlands' most treasured musical institutions. On May 28, 1967, American singer and actor Sammy Davis Jr. appeared at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam for a live, nationwide TV broadcast. Supported by his band conducted by George Rhodes, Davis Jr. combined his singing talent and infectious sense of humor as he covered songs from a variety of genres.


Lionel Hampton Big Band

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 16 AT 21:00 CEST

The Kurhaus in Scheveningen is a grand hotel in the Netherlands renowned for attracting both royal and musical nobility. Doubling as a concert hall, it has been host to several heavy hitters, such as the Rolling Stones and Ike and Tina Turner. On August 2, 1983, American vibraphonist Lionel Hampton performed at the Kurhaus in Scheveningen. Accompanied by his big band, which included talents such as saxophonist Arnett Cobb, the "King of Vibes" gave an invigorating performance with both mallets and voice.


Oscar Peterson Trio and Ella Fitzgerald

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 23 AT 21:00 CEST

The Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam is a world-renowned concert hall, known for its first-rate acoustics. It has attracted many famous performers over the years and is one of the Netherlands' most treasured musical institutions. On May 5, 1957, jazz impresario Norman Granz presented his Jazz at the Philharmonic tour at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. The Canadian pianist Oscar Peterson and his trio of guitarist Herb Ellis and bassist Ray Brown are later joined by trumpeter Roy Eldridge and drummer Jo Jones. As an added attraction, American violinist Stuff Smith joins the proceedings. American singer Ella Fitzgerald, accompanied by pianist Don Abney, Ellis, Brown and Jones, hits her vocal peak in a stunning set that culminates in a jam session of It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing) with the entire ensemble.


Erroll Garner

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 30 AT 21:00 CET

On June 18, 1962, American pianist and composer Erroll Garner performed at the Singer Concertzaal in Laren. The vibrant and joyous concert was played with drummer Kelly Martin and bassist Eddie Calhoun, each long-standing collaborators from Garner's trio. The Singer Concertzaal in Laren, the Netherlands is a concert hall and museum dedicated to the preservation of the art collection of American William Henry Singer. It features a variety of artists, both visual and aural.
