APRIL PREMIERES

EVERY SUNDAY EVENING THROUGHOUT APRIL AT 21:00 CEST

Every Sunday evening throughout April, Stingray DJAZZ premieres new concerts at 21:00 CEST. This month, special attention goes to concerts recorded in the Netherlands, at the Newport Jazz Festival in Rotterdam and the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague. The Newport Jazz Festival, which has its origins in the American town of Newport, Rhode Island, is one of the largest multi-day celebrations of jazz worldwide. Over the years it has spawned several worldwide tours, including editions of the Newport Jazz Festival in Rotterdam. The North Sea Jazz Festival, the largest indoor music festival in the world, is known globally as the event that explores the past, present and future of jazz in three days. The audiovisual archives of both festivals hold priceless gems from jazz history. On April 2, be suitably impressed by the Giants of Jazz: this all-star band features drummer Art Blakey, trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, bassist Al McKibbon, pianist Thelonious Monk, saxophonist Sonny Stitt, and trombonist Kai Winding. On April 9, watch the Belgian orchestra of pianist Francy Boland, the Dutch band of trumpeter Boy Edgar, and the American big band co-led by trumpeter Thad Jones and drummer Mel Lewis. On April 16, let yourself be blown away by pianist Dave Brubeck, vibraphonists Gary Burton and Red Norvo, and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie. On April 23, marvel at legendary Canadian pianist Oscar Peterson, who gave countless stunning performances at the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague. Performing as a duo with double bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, Peterson demonstrates his piano skills with aplomb in this 1979 concert.
