BACK TO SCHOOL
SEPTEMBER 2 – 6 AT 21:00
As summer draws to a close, it’s time to head back to school! Brush up on your knowledge of jazz during the first week of September, when Stingray DJAZZ broadcasts the most insightful documentaries on the origins of the genre. On Monday and Tuesday, vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater explores the European and African music traditions in the two-part documentary ‘Crossroads’, which covers the cultural heritage of jazz from Rio to New Orleans and Europe. From New Orleans, stride, swing, boogie woogie, big band, jump band, blues, bebop, Afro-Cuban, cool, and free-form jazz, to jazz vocalists and dancers: never before has the history of jazz been told as vividly and with as much attention to historic detail by the jazz legends who lived it as in ‘The Story of Jazz’, shown on Stingray DJAZZ on Wednesday, September 4. On Thursday and Friday, ‘Blue Note - A Story of Modern Jazz’ tells the captivating story of the rise of modern jazz as documented by Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff, who emigrated from Nazi Germany to New York where they began to record virtually unknown musicians for their Blue Note label, following their own taste and judgment. Their artists – including Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey, Dexter Gordon, Ron Carter, and Herbie Hancock – have become synonymous with the great Jazz Age. Enjoy our crash course in jazz history from September 2 to 6 at 21:00 – nightly on Stingray DJAZZ!

Blue Note: A Story of Modern Jazz Part I & II
SEPTEMBER 5 & 6 AT 21:00
Art Blakey, Dexter Gordon, Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, Thelonious Monk… these names are synonymous with the great Jazz Age. But how many people know Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff, to whom we owe the recorded memory of our Jazz legends? Two German Jews who emigrated from Nazi Germany to New York "discovered" an American art form which at the time received little serious attention from mainstream America: Jazz Music. Without money or connections and speaking little English, the two men began to record practically unknown musicians, following their own taste and judgment. Today this list of artists reads like the Who-is-Who of Jazz. "Blue Note - A Story of Modern Jazz" tells the story of Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff and their record label. It is the story of the rise of Modern Jazz, of a friendship in exile and of uncompromising artistic excellence. Told by the musicians, by friends and associates and by fans of the Blue Note recordings from all walks of life, the film Blue Note recreates an era of American cultural history.
