Six-episode series “Jazz Greats” dives into the music’s history to once again revel at the genius of some of its most famous founding fathers. These celebrated jazz musicians have a near-mythic status and are still discussed with the utmost respect and fascination. The idiosyncratic pianist and composer Thelonious Monk (1917-1982) is one of the all-time greats of jazz. He is seen here in performance with his quartet in Copenhagen, Denmark (April 17, 1966) and Warsaw, Poland (April 4, 1966).

American jazz trumpeter, composer, and bandleader Dizzy Gillespie (1917-1993) was a seminal figure of bebop, fusing Cuban, Latin America and Caribbean influences. On November 4, 1970 he performed in Denmark with the Kenny Clarke/Francy Boland Big Band.
