EDITOR’S CHOICE
SATURDAY, JANUARY 28 AT 21:00 CET
Like every month, Editor’s Choice presents a hand-picked favorite of Stingray DJAZZ's editor-in-chief, Karen van der Stal. This month's choice – a Stingray DJAZZ premiere! – fell on a 1985 Sun Ra Arkestra concert at the annual open-air music festival Estival Jazz a Lugano. This five-day musical Mecca in the picturesque Swiss city of Lugano has been an unmissable event for fans of jazz and international music since 1979. On July 3, 1985, pianist and space-faring jazz icon Sun Ra and his Arkestra crash-landed here. Featuring saxophonists Marshall Allen, John Gilmore and Danny Ray Thompson, clarinetist Eloe Omoe, flautist James Jackson, trombonist Tyrone Hill and a cavalcade of other costumed talents, pianist and bandleader Sun Ra put on a truly out-of-this-world concert.
