Like every month, Editor’s Choice presents a handpicked favorite of Stingray DJAZZ's editor-in-chief, Karen van der Stal. This month, Karen spotlights annual jazz conference and festival inJazz, which takes place at LantarenVenster in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. inJazz brings together the supply and demand sides of the Dutch jazz scene, helping artists share knowledge and experiences and stimulating the development of international relationships. Stingray DJAZZ highlights three showcases recorded on June 27 and 28, 2019. Our evening begins with two songs from Sabrina Starke’s inJazz performance. Starke, a Dutch self-made, award-winning singer-songwriter, producer, and self-empowerment ambassador, is celebrated for her soul-soothing music. Next are four tunes by Agnes Gosling, a Dutch vocalist unafraid to show her vulnerability. With her bandmates Aram Kersbergen, Stuart McCallum, Richard Spaven, Gosling honors the tradition of great acoustic jazz while exploring new sounds and styles from the contemporary music world. Last is a full set by Ponyland, a UK-based septet. Consisting of Frankie O’Keeffe, Geoff Bartholomew, Jordie Cooke, Mark Johnson, Faye McCalman, John Pope, and Adam Stapleford, the group brings together professional musicians from across Newcastle and Cumbria to create a unique sound. With two drummers, vocals, guitars, and a mighty horn section, the group creates a heady, energetic mix of samba-reggae, drum and bass, Afrobeat and jazz. One of the artists performing at inJazz is Sabrina Starke, a self-made, award-winning singer-songwriter, producer and self-empowerment ambassador. She has won an impressive number of prestigious awards for her soul-soothing music.

With her quartet, Gosling honors the tradition of great acoustic jazz while exploring new sounds and styles from the contemporary music world.
