EDITOR’S CHOICE: JAMES ‘BLOOD’ ULMER FT. LAKECIA BENJAMIN
SATURDAY, MAY 25 AT 21:00
Like every month, Editor’s Choice presents a hand-picked favorite of Stingray DJAZZ's editor-in-chief, Karen van der Stal. This month's choice fell on an electrifying James 'Blood' Ulmer concert at the Sons d'Hiver Festival in Paris, France. Vocalist and electric guitarist James 'Blood' Ulmer learned the secret of producing the blues essence from his father. Ulmer first came to prominence in the 1970s when he partnered with legendary free-jazz pioneer Ornette Coleman, who stimulated him to play free guitar improvisations. As a result, James 'Blood' Ulmer became an initiator of 'free funk', a groovy style that rebelled against the new order of neo-bop. In his concert at Sons d'Hiver, Ulmer rekindles the fiery memory of his successful 1980s band Phalanx with a dynamic new quartet featuring saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin. Benjamin’s energetic stage presence and commitment to pushing the boundaries of jazz have made her a standout performer in today's music scene. For those interested in the latest currents in jazz and the artists shaping its future, Lakecia Benjamin is certainly an artist to watch.

James 'Blood' Ulmer, the 'Blues Preacher', holds the secret of producing the blues' essence that he learned from his father. However, Ulmer is perhaps more famous for his partnership with Ornette Coleman, who decided to teach the guitarist to play free improvisation in the seventies. Consequently, James 'Blood' Ulmer became an initiator of 'free funk', which rebelled against the new order of neo-bop in the eighties. Now most of his original peers have gone, Ulmer rekindles their fiery memory with a new band.
