Estival Jazz has been a mainstay summer jazz festival in Switzerland’s Lugano since 1977. Year after year it presents a surprising combination of artists in exploration of the rich world of contemporary music, promoting mutual understanding between different cultures. On July 7 – the first day of 2023’s edition – Stingray DJAZZ broadcasts legendary concerts recorded at Estival Jazz. Brazilian bossa nova and samba vocalist Astrud Gilberto gives an outstanding, swinging performance at Estival Jazz. Her star-studded band features her son Marcello Gilberto, David Sacks, Gil Goldstein, and Eduardo da Fonseca. Gilberto, who started recording her own compositions in the 1970s, has recorded songs in Portuguese, English, Spanish, Italian, French, German, and even Japanese. This broadcast is followed by a Tania Maria performance that will make you want to dance. The singer, composer and pianist’s popular and jazzy song’s combine elements of samba, bossa nova, Afro-Latin and jazz fusion. The evening is closed by South African singer and civil rights activist Miriam ‘Mama Africa’ Makeba. She was among the first African musicians to receive worldwide recognition. She brought African music to a Western audience, and popularized world music and Afropop. Her performance at Estival Jazz is beyond incredible. Together with her talented band, the lady’s powerful, immensely soulful voice highlights the sheer universal appeal of her music. Miriam Makeba, also named Mama Africa, was a South African singer, actress, United Nations goodwill ambassador, and civil-rights activist. Her career flourished in the US, where she released several albums. Makeba was among the first African musicians to receive worldwide recognition. She brought African music to a Western audience, and popularized the world music and Afropop genres. Her performances at Estival Lugano is beyond incredible. Her voice, the power and the soul summarizes her musicality in 40 minutes, together with her band and extremely talented backing-vocals.
