FESTIVAL NUITS D'AFRIQUE
TUESDAY, JULY 11 FROM 21:00 CEST ONWARD
In the festive, authentic and cosmopolitan atmosphere of Montreal, Festival International Nuits d'Afrique invites its audience on a global musical journey. Featuring over 700 artists from all over the world, the annual festival blends unique expressions of African, Caribbean and Latin American culture. One of the festival’s participating artists is Colombian multi-instrumentalist Ramon Chicharron, who now calls Montreal his home. He expresses his roots by fusing sounds, rhythms and languages with Afro-Colombian cumbia and champeta beats mixed with salsa. With lyrics inspired by the goddess Pachamama (‘Puya Amazonica’) and the situation of immigrants (‘El Tren’, ‘Planeta Flotante’), Ramon Chicharron hopes to share a serious message while preserving Afro-Colombian folklore. Next up is Degg J Force 3. This group was founded in 1997 in the Kaloum district of Conakry, Guinea, by brothers Moussa and Ablaya M’Baye (also known as Skandal) and Moussa Camara (also known as 2Pac). The band's name, which roughly translates as ‘Force 3 truth’, refers to the Right, the Good and the True. Operating between Afro rap, Afro reggae and dancehall, the trio stands out for its political and social commitment, drawing inspiration from African culture. Last but not least, enjoy a performance by Guinean singer and instrumentalist Sékouba Bambino. He has been at the forefront of his nation’s music since 1983, when he became the singer of the legendary group Bembeya Jazz National. He has since built a successful solo career, gathering a large fanbase across West Africa, and gaining international attention as a member of Afro-salsa super group Africando. Enjoy Stingray DJAZZ’s Nuits d’Afrique festival kickstart on July 11 from 21:00 onward. Experience it all on Stingray DJAZZ!
