Gregory Porter at the Blue Note Festival
FRIDAY, JUNE 3 AT 21:00 CEST
Unlike many of his fellow jazz cats, vocalist Gregory Porter transcends the jazz bubble. After sustaining a shoulder injury, this former American football player turned to jazz singing. He was discovered in a Californian jazz club by pianist, saxophonist and composer Kamau Kenyatta. Porter lent his vocal skills to gospel choirs across the country and a string of successful musicals before turning his talent to his own compositions. His rise since then has been meteoric. Porter’s magnificent, burnished baritone can sink into a lyric with luxurious ease, the melody gently sculpted into new shapes at every turn, with the rhythm tugging subtly back and forth across the bar line. This live performance at the Olympia showcases this man's worth, and is a truly amazing experience!
Ryan Porter & The West Coast Get Down - BIRD
FRIDAY, JUNE 10 AT 21:00 CEST
Los Angeles-born saxophonist Kamasi Washington and trombonist Ryan Porter co-founded West Coast Get Down – a musical collective fusing jazz and funk with hip-hop. It is partly because of this collective that jazz saw a resurgence in Los Angeles, subtly eclipsing the long-established jazz mecca of the world, New York City. The two musicians join forces and take the vibes of Los Angeles to jazz club BIRD in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
Lianne La Havas - Casino de Paris
FRIDAY, JUNE 17 AT 21:00 CEST
Lianne La Havas’ performance at Casino de Paris captures the British singer-songwriter at her best: with her crystalline voice she performs soulful melodies full of sincerity. The performance is part of La Havas’ 'Blood Tour', a concert tour promoting her second album 'Blood' (2015). She is accompanied by James Wyatt on keys, Adam Prendergast on bass, Giles King Ashong on drums, and Frida Touray on backing vocals.
Ron Carter - Foursight
FRIDAY, JUNE 24 AT 21:00 CEST
An evening with the “Foursight” quartet takes you on a tour of Ron Carter’s discography, with two thousand five hundred albums, which is to say the consideration he has received since his debut in 1959. After accompanying Jacky Byard and Eric Dolphy, he joined Miles Davis’ legendary VSOP with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and Tony Williams, among others. Much more than an accompanist, the double bassist is above all a great soloist, as much in intimate trios as in advanced experimental formations or large orchestras. He will be remarkably surrounded here, during his “Foursight” show at Jazz sous les pommiers 2019.
