World Music Expo (WOMEX) is an annual trade fair that organizes showcases and celebrates international music. The convention takes place in a different city every year: 2024’s edition is held in Manchester, United Kingdom. Stingray DJAZZ pays special attention to the 30th anniversary of this wonderful event by broadcasting a recap of WOMEX showcases, recorded in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 2018. On October 23, witness the fiery blend of traditional French songs and original instrumentals by Vishten, a trio fusing Celtic, Acadian, and contemporary folk influences with energetic virtuosity. On October 24, delight in the sparkling compositions and dazzling musicianship of power trio Toko Telo featuring vocalist Monika Njava, inspired by their southern Madagascar roots. On October 25, immerse yourself in the golden age of Congolese rumba with Bakolo Music International, led by the legendary singer and guitarist Bikunda. On October 26, explore the revolutionary sounds of Korean percussionist Kim So Ra, as she modernizes perceptions within traditional Korean music. On October 27, experience the powerful mix of Voodoo blues, Haitian rock, and Creole roll with vocalist Moonlight Benjamin’s riff-heavy performance – at 14:00 daily on Stingray DJAZZ!

Since 1994, World Music Expo (WOMEX) has been attracting musicians, agents, a great number of press agencies, as well as media companies from all over the world. Its main exposition event has been held in various locations throughout Europe, including Berlin, Brussels, Marseille, Stockholm, Seville, Cardiff, and Budapest. The 2018 edition of WOMEX was held in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. One of its showcase participants, Vishten, has been animating audiences for 15 years with its fiery blend of traditional French songs and original instrumentals fusing Celtic, Acadian and contemporary folk influences with energetic virtuosity. The trio comprises multi-instrumentalists Emmanuelle and Pastelle LeBlanc from Prince Edward Island and Pascal Miousse from the Magdalen Islands.

One of its showcase participants, Malagasy power trio Toko Telo, combines dazzling musicianship with sparkling compositions inspired by their shared southern Madagascar roots, featuring the soulful voice of Monika Njava and dexterously interweaving guitar wizardry from D’Gary and Joël Rabesolo.

In 2018, WOMEX was held in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. One of its showcase participants, Bakolo Music International, represents the pioneers of the golden age of Congolese rumba. The singer, guitarist and grand survivor Nzofu Moko Buele, known to all as Bikunda, is carrying on a torch first lit in 1948 by ‘Papa’ Wend Kolosoy, the ‘father of Congolese Rumba’ and composer of the first Rumba hit song, ‘Marie-Louise’.

One of its showcase participants, Korean percussionist Kim So Ra, has played the hourglass-shaped, two-headed drum known as janggu since she was a child. Quietly, she has been taking revolutionary steps to modernize perceptions within traditional Korean music.
