BLUE NOTE RECORDS CELEBRATES 86

MONDAY, JUNE 30 AT 21:00

Blue Note Records is arguably the most prestigious jazz label. Since its foundation 86 years ago this year, the venerable record company has never ceased to attract young talent. On Monday, June 30, Stingray DJAZZ focuses on the legendary label from 21:00. How do jazz standards of yore inspire today’s musicians? And can early-day jazz play a role in current pop and indie music? For the short documentary ‘Take Away Blue: a Blue Note Tribute’, French filmmaker Colin Solal Cardo visited New York, Montreal, and several places in Europe to find the answers from singer-songwriter Patrick Watson, composer Moses Sumney, multi-instrumentalist Alex Zhang Hungtai, and electronic music producer Mondkopf. Each of these artists reflects on a specific musical memory, before they proceed to perform acoustic sets. Eleven years ago, in celebration of Blue Note Records’ 75th anniversary, young musicians formed the 2014 Blue Note All Stars and appeared at the Blue Note Jazz Festival at the Gaîté Lyrique in Paris. Pianist Robert Glasper, guitarist Lionel Loueke, virtuoso trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, bassist Derrick Hodge, saxophonist Marcus Strickland, and drummer Kendrick Scott constituted the dream line-up. United for the concert, they played songs from their respective albums, as well as great standards revisited for the occasion. Experience the next level of jazz on June 30 – from 21:00 on Stingray DJAZZ!

Take Away Blue, a Blue Note Tribute

MONDAY, JUNE 30 AT 21:00

Can jazz play a role in pop and indie music? How do jazz standards inspire today’s musicians? This short film is a tribute to Blue Note Records, which celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2014. Colin Solal Cardo visited New York, Montreal, Lisbon, and a small village in Ardéche, France to find the answers from four seasoned artists. Singer-songwriter Patrick Watson covers “Summertime” with a string quartet, composer Moses Sumney improvises a cappella on “Moanin’'' in the streets of New York City, multi-instrumentalist Alex Zhang Hungtai jams on “Blue Train” in a Lisbon cellar, and electronic music producer Mondkopf weaves a propelling piece from “Turning Point” at a campground. Each segment opens with the artists reflecting on a specific musical memory before performing an acoustic set.
