COLLECTIONS - GREATEST JAZZ DRUMMERS
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 13 FROM 21:00 ONWARD
Embark on a remarkable journey through the world of jazz drumming as we highlight some of the most iconic and influential drummers in history. Revel in the skill of Mel Lewis, who was not only a legendary drummer but also an adept band leader. After co-leading a successful orchestra with trumpeter Thad Jones, he led what was arguably the most influential big band since the swing era: the Mel Lewis Orchestra. Seen here at Lugano Estival Jazz in 1985, this ensemble pioneered new styles during an era when big bands were out of fashion. The aforementioned Thad Jones’ younger brother, drummer Elvin Jones, toured Europe in 1991. There, the hard-hitting 'Mr. Jazz Machine' performed with formidable sidemen, including saxophonists Sonny Fortune and John Coltrane’s son, Ravi. Let the subtle fusion of drummer Jack DeJohnette captivate you, as he leads his Special Edition quintet at Lugano Estival Jazz 1985. They perform the ironic but affectionate "Ahmad the Terrible," dedicated to pianist Ahmad Jamal, and the vibrant, spontaneous "Third World Anthem." Get to know some of the greatest drummers in jazz history with this unique collection of historic recordings – all on Stingray DJAZZ!
