DJAZZ PRESENTS: THE STORY OF PAPA WEMBA

SEPTEMBER 19 AT 21:00 CEST

African heritage and its importance in jazz history is usually overshadowed by the well-documented role of European concert music. While most jazz lovers know who Bach or Beethoven were, many enthusiasts would be hard-pressed to name the major figures of African music history. Both Africa and Europe share an equally important influence on jazz, yet the African influence is still too often overlooked. Stingray DJAZZ devotes special attention to some of Africa’s greatest. The life story of one of them, Papa Wemba, airs on Saturday, September 19 at 21:00 CEST, on Stingray DJAZZ.

The Story of Papa Wemba

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 19 AT 21:00 CEST

Nicknamed 'the father of Congolese rumba', Papa Wemba (1949-2016) became a legend despite himself. He was a member of well-known Congolese and African rumba groups such as ‘Zaïko Langa Langa’, and became one of Africa's most popular musicians in his day. The documentary film 'History of Papa Wemba' traces the story of this iconic, trailblazing and intergenerational music artist, who was a true heir to Elvis, Fela, and Tabu Ley.
