Like every month, Editor’s Choice presents a hand-picked favorite of Stingray DJAZZ's editor-in-chief Rokas Kučinskas. This month's choice fell on the duo of Robert Glasper and Jason Moran. These two stellar pianists from Houston, Texas, are celebrated for their unique styles and innovative approach to early 21st-century jazz. Performing as a duo, they give their own spin to a long piano duo tradition in jazz: many of the genre's greatest pianists were inspired by the two-piano format. Chick Corea, for example, performed some of his most inspired concerts side by side with Hiromi Uehara, Keith Jarrett, Herbie Hancock and Joe Zawinul. As part of the Blue Note Jazz Festival and Blue Note Records’ 75th anniversary, pianists Robert Glasper and Jason Moran delivered a stunning jazz piano duet, resulting in an exciting exploration of the great history of jazz. An intricate knowledge of African-American music is infused with modern energy. The two musicians reinterpret the stride piano tradition through captivating original songs and personal interpretations of the music of Albert Ammons, Andrew Hill, Thelonious Monk, Ornette Coleman and Herbie Hancock.
