EDITOR’S CHOICE: STÉPHANE GRAPPELLI
SATURDAY, JUNE 29 AT 21:00
Like every month, Editor’s Choice presents a hand-picked favorite of Stingray DJAZZ's editor-in-chief, Karen van der Stal. This month's choice fell on jazz violinist Stéphane Grappelli performing at Maison de la Radio, Paris. In this 1961 concert, Stéphane Grappelli is joined by drummer Daniel Humair, guitarist Léo Petit, double bassist Guy Pedersen, and guitarist Pierre Cullaz. Grappelli opens the concert with a rare solo piano performance, proving he mastered the piano as well as the violin. The program features evergreens from the gypsy jazz repertoire, including Django Reinhardt’s “Nuages”, and “Minor Swing”, which was first released in 1937 by the famous Quintette du Hot Club de France, which included both Grappelli and Reinhardt.
