INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAY
SUNDAY, APRIL 30 FROM 14:00 CEST ONWARD
International Jazz Day is the world’s largest celebration of jazz. Since 2011, UNESCO's International Jazz Day has been raising worldwide awareness of the virtues of jazz as a force of peace, freedom, diversity, unity, and dialogue that enhances cooperation among people and is an effective educational tool. Central to the celebrations is an official “All-Star Global Concert”. On this day, Stingray DJAZZ broadcast several concerts by musicians who have participated in last year’s global concert. Enjoy a vintage concert by Herbie Hancock – currently UNESCO Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue – and The Headhunters, which ushered in the 1970s: a new era of jazz that appealed to a far wider audience, turning rhythm and blues fans into jazz listeners, and vice versa. Stingray DJAZZ continues International Jazz Day with another headlining musician of the All-Star Global Concert: Gregory Porter. His magnificent, burnished baritone can sink into a lyric with luxurious ease, the melody gently sculpted into new shapes at every turn, with the rhythm tugging subtly back and forth across the bar line. Last but not least, José James rounds off International Jazz Day on Stingray DJAZZ. His honeyed voice is as bewitching as ever in this 2019 Jazz à Vienne performance. Celebrate International Jazz Day on Sunday, April 30 from 14:00 CEST onward – all on Stingray DJAZZ!
Herbie Hancock
Sunday, April 30, 14:05 CEST
American keyboard player and bandleader Herbie Hancock (1940) achieved success as an incisive, harmonically provocative jazz pianist in the 1960s, then went on to gain wide popularity as a leader of electric jazz-rock groups. One of these, Hancock’s band The Headhunters, ushered in a new era of jazz that appealed to a far wider audience, making jazz listeners out of rhythm and blues fans, and vice versa. In 1974, The Headhunters appeared on German television, playing Palm Grease, Sly, Butterfly, Spank-A-Lee, and Chameleon. Hancock (keys) is joined by Bennie Maupin (saxophones), Paul Jackson (electric bass), Mike Clark (drums) and Bill Summer (percussion).
Gregory Porter
Sunday, April 30, 15:10 CEST
‘Jazz a Vienne’ is one of the world's most prestigious jazz festivals. Ever since 1981 it has attracted leading jazz artists, with many of them playing return engagements. Unsurprisingly, the festival's 2012 edition did not fall short of expectations: the lineup was filled with the biggest names in music. Among them was vocalist Gregory Porter transcends the jazz bubble. His magnificent, burnished baritone can sink into a lyric with luxurious ease, the melody gently sculpted into new shapes at every turn, with the rhythm tugging subtly back and forth across the bar line.
José James
Sunday, April 30, 15:50 CEST
Since bursting onto the international scene in the late 2000s, José James and his honeyed voice are as bewitching as ever in this 2019 performance at Jazz à Vienne. Flitting between raw soul, soul-folk, hip-hop, and jazz, James is one of the few vocalists capable of keeping the crossover created by Ray Charles in the ‘50s alive. After sensitive and intelligent odes to Billie Holiday and John Coltrane, this time James pays tribute to a living legend of American popular music: soul man Bill Withers. James performs Bill Withers's unforgettable songs, accompanied by Marcus Machado (guitar), Aneesa Strings (bass, vocals), and Aaron Steele (drums).
