JUNE PREMIERES: FRENCH ARCHIVES

This program features a performance of two Scandinavian jazz trios, recorded in Paris in 1973. First up is a performance of the Terje Rypdal Trio, consisting of guitarist Terje Rydal, drummer Jon Christensen, and bassist Sveinung Hovensgo. Rydal creates an intriguing sound on his electric guitar. The second part of this broadcast features a performance of the Jan Garbarek Trio, featuring Jan Garbarek on saxophone, Arild Andersen on double bass, and Edward Vesala on drums. Before Rydal formed his own trio, both Christensen and he played in one of Garbarek's quartets, which also featured Andersen. They recorded the resounding free jazz album 'Afric Pepperbird' in 1970.

This broadcast features American jazz pianist and composer Erroll Garner in concert at Maison de la Radio in Paris, 1973. Garner came from a musical family and started playing the piano at the age of three. The pianist’s live album Concert by the Sea, recorded in 1955, is one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time. Accompanied by Ernest McCarty on double bass, Jimmie Smith on drums, and José Mangual on percussion, Garner amazes his Paris audience with many of his signature songs, including his composition “Misty”, which became a jazz standard over time and was performed by numerous greats, such as Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and Aretha Franklin.

This broadcast presents bossa nova singer Astrud Gilberto, followed by the Dave Brubeck Quartet, in performance at the third edition of the Paris Jazz Festival. This collaboration with the Newport Jazz Festival was billed as "Newport à Paris" and took place in mid-November 1966. Brazilian vocalist Astrud Gilberto performs with Benny Aronov (piano), Don Payne (double bass), Don McDonald (percussion), and Art Ellefson (saxophone and flute). She sings Água de Beber, Corcovado, The Telephone Song, and The Shadow of Your Smile. The all-American Dave Brubeck Quartet, consisting of Brubeck on piano, Paul Desmond on alto saxophone, Eugene Wright on double bass, and Joe Morello on drums, performs Brubeck's own composition Cultural Exchange, the group's classic hit Take Five, and Billy Strayhorn's Take The "A" Train.

Recorded in 1971 in Paris, France, Brazilian, classically trained bossa nova guitarist Baden Powell and his quartet play Pai, Lotus (written by Baden Powell), Tristeza (by Haroldo Lobo/Niltinho), Round Midnight (by Thelonious Monk), Nega do cabelo duro (by David Nasser/Rubens Soares), and Aos pes da cruz (by Zé da Zilda/Marino Pinto). Powell is joined by Ernesto Ribeiro-Gonçalves on double bass, Helio Schiavo on drums, and Alfredo Bessa on percussion.
