ON THIS DAY – A GREAT DAY IN HARLEM

MONDAY, AUGUST 12 AT 21:00

Freelance fashion and music photographer Art Kane pointed his camera at 57 American jazz musicians in Harlem in New York City on the morning of August 12, 1958. “The most iconic photograph in jazz history” features the faces of jazz royalty including Count Basie, Maxine Sullivan, Hank Jones, Marian McPartland, Charles Mingus, Mary Lou Williams, Sonny Rollins and Benny Golson. Stingray DJAZZ presents concerts by three other legendary figures pictured in the famous photograph on Monday, August 12 from 21:00. Firstly, revel at hard-hitting drummer and hard bop pioneer Art Blakey leading his short-lived troupe The New Jazzmen at the Palais de la Mutualité in Paris in November 1965. Afterward, swing along with bebop pioneer Dizzy Gillespie in performance in Denmark with the Kenny Clarke/Francy Boland Big Band in 1970. Lastly, legendary jazz pianist Horace Silver's groundbreaking fusion of hard bop, blues, soulful grooves and Cape Verdean influences rarely sounded better than during his irresistible performance at the Umbria Jazz Festival, Italy, in July 1976. Snap your fingers to three giants from jazz’s most famous snapshot on August 12 from 21:00 – all on Stingray DJAZZ!

Art Blakey

MONDAY, AUGUST 12 AT 21:00

Art Blakey: Live in '65 features a very impressive lineup from jazz history: Art Blakey (drums), Jaki Byard (piano), Reggie Workman (bass), Nathan Davis (sax), and the legendary trumpet player, Freddie Hubbard. For a fall tour of Europe, Blakey assembled The New Jazzmen, a short-lived quintet that performed this legendary concert at La Mutualité in Paris on November 3, 1965.

Dizzy Gillespie

MONDAY, AUGUST 12 AT 21:55

American jazz trumpeter, composer, and bandleader Dizzy Gillespie (1917-1993) was one of the seminal figures of the bebop movement. He fuses all musical forms rooted in African culture, such as music from Cuba, Latin America and the Caribbean, into his music. On November 4, 1970 he played a concert in Denmark with the Kenny Clarke/Francy Boland Big Band, performing Con Alma, Brother K, Now Hear My Meanin’, Manteca, Let Me Outta Here, and Things Are Here.

Horace Silver

MONDAY, AUGUST 12 AT 22:45

Legendary jazz pianist Horace Silver's groundbreaking fusion of hard bop, blues, soulful grooves and Cape Verdean influences have left an indelible mark on the world of jazz. At the renowned Umbria Jazz Festival in the picturesque region of Umbria, Italy, Silver is accompanied by a great band of future all-stars: Bob Berg on tenor sax, Tom Harrell on trumpet, Steve Beskrone on bass and Eddie Gladden on drums. During this performance from July 20, 1976, Silver’s quintet stretches out on four Silver originals: “Adjustment”, “Barbara”, “In Pursuit of the 27th Man”, and “Song For My Father”.
