On his birthday, April 2, Stingray DJAZZ pays tribute to the legendary Marvin Gaye, one of the leading voices of the iconic soul music label Motown. After singing in his father's church and with the vocal group the Moonglows, Gaye rose to stardom at Motown, where his seminal 1971 protest album ‘What's Going On’ redefined the genre. His incredible career was tragically and violently cut short in 1984. Stingray DJAZZ’s salute begins at 21:00 with a brand new channel premiere. In a powerful tribute to Marvin Gaye, renowned French soul and hip-hop vocalist Sly Johnson (of Saïan Supa Crew fame) and Italian keyboardist Nicholas Vella deliver a vibrant homage centered on Gaye's monumental album ‘What's Going On’. This 2021 concert was recorded live at Chorus, Le Mans, France’s well-known concert venue. Following this great new addition to the Stingray DJAZZ catalogue, the insightful documentary ‘Rock Legends: Marvin Gaye’ offers compelling archival footage and expert interviews shedding light on Gaye’s turbulent life and enduring musical legacy. Sly Johnson & Nicholas Vella - Tribute to Marvin Gaye

For 20 years, Sly Johnson, author, composer and performer of the Saïan Supa Crew, has been touring the French music scene with his soul, hip-hop and beat-box vocals. He leaves his machines in the studio for a tribute concert to one of the leading voices of the famous Motown label, Marvin Gaye. The singer was killed by his father, a pastor, the day before his 45th birthday. In 1971, Marvin Gaye released a major record in the history of soul music "What's Going On". Sly Johnson, accompanied by Nicholas Vella's keyboard, makes the hot music of this album groove, a monument of soul and rhythm'n'blues. A true message of love delivered by MarvinGaye, through the story of a Vietnam war veteran who returns home and sees only injustice, suffering and hatred. The abrasive groove of Sly Johnson and Nicholas Vella is a rich music at the crossroads of hip-hop, funk and jazz. Sly Johnson, a great regular of the stage, embarks with extreme generosity the audience in his musical universe, an irresistible performance.


Marvin Gaye - Rock Legends

Born in 1939, in Washington, D.C., Marvin Gaye sang in his father's church and in the Moonglows before signing with Motown. He recorded songs by Smokey Robinson before becoming his own producer on the protest album What's Going On (1971). Gaye was killed in 1984 during a domestic dispute with his father.
